Join us this Friday, February 24th , from 5 - 7pm, for the Opening Reception of “Emergence: From Concept to Stitch,” featuring work by selected members of the Studio Art Quilt Associates of Oregon, and “Lady Corona,” showcasing the fiber work of Jo-Ann Morgan. All Art Center exhibit receptions are free and open to the public.

Emergence: From Concept to Stitch features 17 individual Oregon artist members of the Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA), an international organization of over 4,000 artists, curators, collectors, and art professionals located around the world.

The vision for “Emergence: From Concept to Stitch” began with discussions about exploring new and emerging media, marketing opportunities, book events, and gallery exhibitions. Each of the selected artists photographed their work and described their process over a period of six months.

“Emergence: From Concept to Stitch” presents an exciting range of styles and variety of materials, including raw edge fusible appliqué, contour quilting, hand-dyed fabrics, silk and polyester organza, tulle, embroidery, paint, Inktense pencils, sateen, katazome on silk, beads, and speciality yarns.

Lady Corona: Work by Jo-Ann Morgan: Surfside Beach, South Carolina artist Jo-Ann Morgan exhibits a series of striking quilted and appliqued wall hangings. At the beginning of the pandemic, in March 2020, Morgan bought a sewing machine and embarked on her “Lady Corona” series. The principal female figure in the series – “Lady Corona” – is often represented with a crown, gloves, and a mask. She is conceived as a comforting presence offering respite and hope to the victims of social injustice. Her work includes memorials to Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and to the Asian spa victims in Atlanta, Georgia. The familiarity of the traditional quilting medium allows Morgan to make strong, sometimes provocative statements, about social justice reform in an approachable way.
