This nine-week class offers the perfect atmosphere for self-exploration and artistic camaraderie. Students with skills in their chosen medium have the opportunity to learn from each other’s methods, practice new techniques, and paint in a positive and supportive group setting. Each class begins with a critique reviewing the previous week’s work facilitated by Kate. Carefully designed still lifes are provided and students may take advantage of studio time to work on projects of their choice.
Come learn the techniques for creating a wide array of color and tonal value with just 5 tubes of oil paint. Instruction with oil paint will focus on skill-building in the use of value and color with the goal that each student applies these skills to the painting style of their choice. Those with experience and confidence in any painting medium - oil, acrylic, watercolor etc. - may join the class to take advantage of weekly critiques in addition to utilising the still lifes that will be set up for each session.
Materials List, 3 Colors + White: An Introduction to Oil Painting
Build your drawing skills by examining the structure, anatomy, and movement of the human body. In this class, you will be introduced to mark-making materials such as charcoal, Conté crayons, and ink to develop a stronger understanding of volume in figure drawing with a live nude model. Classes will begin with warm-up exercises and will emphasize strengthening observational skills. This course is suitable for students new to figure drawing and students with a good understanding of drawing from observation. Individuals of all experience levels are welcome in this supportive environment.
Get ready to either develop or hone in your skills in watercolor painting. Beginners will enjoy taking it one step at a time in this introductory eight-week course. Class demonstrations and individual instruction will provide beginners as well as intermediate participants a fundamental understanding of watercolor application. This includes learning about basic materials, familiarizing yourself with tools, utilizing basic watercolor techniques, and identifying various ways to blend colors. Each week you will practice small painting exercises and complete several works by the end of the class. Come practice in a relaxed environment where there is no wrong way to learn this magnificent medium.
Get ready to experiment! This class will guide you through understanding the properties of dry mark-making materials like graphite pencils, Conté crayon, oil, and soft pastels. The instructor will give demonstrations as well as hands on instruction. You will first begin exploring common uses of the seperate materials and then explore how they react on various surfaces like wood or canvas. The last two weeks of class will comprise of mixing 2 or more media on either wood, canvas, or paper.
This class series is designed for working artists who wish to build foundational skills for entering the art world. During the course of 6 weeks, we will first reflect on concepts and visual characteristics that shape our work. We will also reflect on the personal and professional experiences that drive our art practices. Students will emerge from the class with an artist resume, artist statement, biography, and a basic visual portfolio to begin seeking professional opportunities.
This hybrid workshop mixes introducing established artists and hands-on creation. The first portion of each class focuses on learning various contemporary and historical artists, their techniques, and larger concepts. Students will then create artwork of their own based on the content they are studying during the second half of class. Each class will be inspired by a new concept or technique, and the exercises will include elements of sculpture, collage, drawing, and printmaking. This workshop will be a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere, perfect for any level of experience!
This figure drawing open studio has 10 sessions. The model will be nude and changes weekly. The length of each pose will vary.
Try your hand at clay! Beginners and those interested in refreshing their skills are welcome in this class as we learn about the materials, methods, simple tricks, tips, and rules involved in hand-building ceramic items. Learn how to make a layered tile, then move up to three dimensions with a vase or cup. The instructor will guide you through hand-building methods such as coils, pinch pots, log rolls, soft slabs, hard slabs, stamps, and sprigs. We will also learn various glaze techniques like staining, sgraffito, resist, inlay, stencils, and more. As you work on projects of your own choosing, you will have the instructor there to help you consider the best design and construction methods.
This hands-on studio course will focus on the technique of relief printmaking with the freedom to experiment at our own pace. This will include practicing multiple variations of linoleum relief carving and using the press to explore unique monotype prints. Students will learn how to transfer their drawn design to the block using tools, inks, and brayers. Students will also learn various methods to create multi-color designs. Some in-depth and advanced techniques will be offered for continuing students and anyone who would like a refresher. No experience is necessary, any level is welcome!

This course is available for those who are interested in working in a darkroom but are unfamiliar with shooting on film. In these individually scheduled, one-on-one courses, an instructor will guide you through the basics of manual camera function and shooting on black & white 35mm film. Bring your own camera or check one out with us.

This flexible and customizable course is designed for beginners with no previous experience in a black & white darkroom. In this individually scheduled, one-on-one course, an instructor will guide you through the basics of darkroom photography processes, adjusting the curriculum to focus on your goals within the medium. Topics covered include processing black & white film, contact printing, and enlargement printing in a black & white darkroom. Please note: This course does not include instructions on camera function & shooting. An additional lesson can be scheduled for those enrolled who require such instruction.

This one-day session is designed for those who have had some previous experience in black & white photography, processing, or printing but have been away from it for some time. We will go through the process of black & white film processing and darkroom printing together as a refresher to these hands-on procedures. Participants must bring an exposed roll of film to work with for this class.

In this two-day workshop, we will create a mixed media artwork based on repetition and symmetry using a symbol (from ancient cultures, folk art, everyday life?, etc.) or an image from nature (plant, animal, insect, element, etc.) that we feel connected to. We will have a discussion about the image we chose then stylize it, simplify it, and use its outline to create the final artwork. The final piece will resemble a pattern design. Several types of media will be explored throughout the workshop. All levels are welcome!
In this workshop, students will use a lap loom and learn how to produce rich abstract designs in just two days. We will go over weaving techniques, design layout basics, and warping. Students will spend some time at the beginning sketching designs and then apply learned techniques to weaving geometric patterns for their final creation. Looms and yarns are provided.
Winter weather brings more time indoors for us and our plants, so why not learn to draw them? In this course we will focus on drawing common houseplants and rendering them in black and white with stylistic linework.
Join River Banks and learn different techniques for this abstract and forgiving way of painting. This is a great class for artists of all levels. On Saturday, River will demo different techniques, help you prepare your colors in order to plan for our pours the next day. On our second day, we will get right into the pouring process, and it will be messy and exciting! The paintings will not be dry until 24 hours after the workshop, so please plan a pick-up time from the art center sometime after the weekend.
Come with a phrase or message to share and create with a digital art poster! You will learn all about Procreate's mark-making and typography tools. Students will use an Ipad, an Apple Pencil drawing stylus, and the app Procreate to explore hand lettering. By the end, you will have a final art print to take home! Maude Kerns will provide the Ipad and related materials for this workshop.
MKAC has a parking lot for art students, visitors, and staff. If you happen to arrive for your class and the parking lot is full, please come into the office and grab a parking pass. This will override the street parking time limits for your class time!
In the event of bad weather, the Art Center will close if Lane Community College is closed. Classes for that day will be cancelled and a make-up session will be held at a later date. In the event that Lane Community College is delayed, all Art Center classes before 12pm will be cancelled. Call 541-345-1571 after 12pm on the day in question to check for afternoon and evening classes.
Full refunds or credits will be offered if cancellation is made 10 business days or more prior to the start date of the class, workshop, or camp. If a cancellation request is made within 6-10 business days prior to class, workshop, or camp the student will receive a 50% refund or credit, and all fees associated with the class will be forfeited. No refund or credits will be given for cancellation requests made 5 business days or less prior to class, workshop, or camp. There are no refunds after the first session of the class, workshop, or camp.
No refunds, credits, or make-ups are offered for individuals who miss a class session.
