Develop your drawing and illustration style! In this class, we work on a series of drawing and illustration projects focused on character, environments, and storytelling. Each lesson covers a concept that will help you develop your art style and unique voice. You’ll learn about proportions and posing a figure (human figures, anthropomorphic animals, and animal characters), as well as expressive marks, pattern making, tone, value, and composition. For each project, we will look at an example illustration - some by other artists and some the instructor provides - for inspiration and to study how the image was made. We will also try different mediums including ink, pencil, watercolor, markers, and colored pencils. Join us as we bring together traditional art, stylized illustration, and comic-style art.
Join us on the 2nd Saturday of every month! This time is for you to bring into view your unique voice and skills. Whether you bring something you are currently working on, or explore a new project or idea, this open studio will provide access to tools and art materials in painting, drawing, and mixed media. If you need someone to bounce ideas off of, Sara will be on hand to help you gain inspiration for your creative process. Our goal is to help support your artistic practice, including helping you document and organize your artwork. Bring your unique self and contribute to a thriving teen arts community!
Spend the week immersed in drawing with Copic markers. These versatile and boldly colored markers are great for learning how to blend colors, understand shading, and highlighting to create dimension in your drawings. Discover how to make dynamic blending groups, work with a limited color palette, add details with fine line and brush pens, and experiment with different kinds of paper. If you already have drawings or sketches, we encourage you to bring those with you! If not we will help you get started on with drawing prompts. See you in the Garden Studio here at the art center!
Middle School Labs are Monday through Friday - 9:00 am - 12 noon. The creative lab does not have scheduled breaks, and students are encouraged to use the bathroom, snack, or get some fresh air whenever needed.
Join us in this class where we'll work on a series of acrylic paintings. Spend a week exploring drawing and illustration! We will be focusing on scenes with characters: human figures, anthropomorphic animals, and animal characters. Using example illustrations we'll study how the image was made and create our own versions inspired by them. Join us for a fun week of learning to draw and illustrate!
Develop a four- to six-page sequential art story. In this lab, we will learn techniques for making comic art, drawing inspiration from different art styles, including manga, newspaper strips, and webcomics. We’ll analyze how cartoonists tell visual stories and learn how to make characters, environments, and objects to create stories of our own. Learn penciling, inking, and coloring to make your comic art the best it can be!
