2008 Spring Classes

2008 Spring Classes are here! This spring, Adult classes include popular favorites, such as "Drawing in Color" and "Basics & Beyond." Our new class offerings include "Capturing Cityscapes," a new Tuesday Open Studio session, and a Workshop titled "The Artist Going Green." We also have a variety of Youth, Young Adult, and Adult Classes at the Art Center! Call 345-1571 to register today!

Gift Certificates are available and are perfect for any special occassion, such as Mother's or Father's Day! Call the Art Center to order your personalized Gift Certificate.

Adult classes include Painting & Drawing classes, including our Painting Series; Sculpture & Ceramic classes; Workshops and Open Studios.

You can register for classes in person with cash, check, or credit card, or by mail with check or credit card. To register for classes at the Maude Kerns Art Center, please call 345-1571. Scholarships are available based on financial eligibility. Nobody will be turned away due to inability to pay before the start date of the class. For more information contact the Art Center.

Winter Weather Advisory: In the event of bad weather, the Art Center will close if Lane Community College is closed. Classes for that day will be cancelled and a make-up session will be held at a later date. In the event that Lane Community College is delayed, all Art Center classes before 12:00pm will be cancelled. Please call 345-1571 after 12:00pm on the day in question for information about afternoon and evening classes.

In our new “Art on the Go” class, you, your fellow classmates, and your instructor will travel to a variety of locations, such as Hendricks Park, the 5th Street Market, Mt. Pisgah, and the Rose Garden. Once you arrive at your destination, you will be free to draw, paint, or sketch your surroundings. Working in an outdoor environment, you will learn what materials are best to use and review concepts that will strengthen your artistic abilities. Drawing in Color

Capturing Cityscapes

For centuries, artists have attempted to capture the cityscape on canvas. In Italy, this practice became known as “veduta,” a style in which an artist depicts a city in such a life-like way that the location can be recognized from the painting. Following in the footsteps of these “veduta” artists, such as Corot, Gelati, or Signorini, you will create your own cityscapes. With the help of your instructor, you will develop your understanding of perspective and composition as you strengthen your painting techniques and style. You will also experiment with incorporating figures into your painting. Instruction will be in oils, but students are free to use any medium of their choice. All skill levels welcome. 8 Sessions.

The Artist Going Green

Want to know what you can do as an artist to help your planet? Wondering which art supplies are the most environmentally friendly? Join us for this new unique workshop and find out. Led by accomplished artist and Art Center instructor Jerry Ross, this workshop will introduce artists to green practices for painting. Jerry will discuss a variety of pertinent topics including prepping support materials, such as canvases. He will also discuss using non-toxic varnishes, glazes, and solvents responsibly while painting. You will have the opportunity to watch demonstrations and take advantage of a question and answer period during a brief lunch break.
