2012 Winter Classes & Workshops

2012 Winter Classes for youth, young adults and adults are here! Gift Certificates are also available for Art Classes, Art Center Membership, or you can customize your perfect holiday gift. Winter Adult classes begin the week of January 9th and include Painting & Drawing classes, Ceramic classes, Winter Workshop and Open Studios.


For young artists, we have Youth Classes for youth ages 6-12 as well as
Young Adult Classes
for ages 10-16. Classes for youth and young adults begin the week of January 9th. The Art Center also offers Private Lessons for youth and young adults.

You can register for classes in person with cash, check, or credit card, or by mail with check or credit card. To register for classes at the Maude Kerns Art Center, please call 345-1571. Scholarships are available based on financial eligibility. For more information contact the Art Center.

Winter Weather Advisory
In the event of bad weather, the Art Center will close if Lane Community (LCC) is closed. Classes for that day will be cancelled and a make-up session will be held at a later date. In the event LCC is delayed, all Art Center classes before 12pm will be cancelled. Please call after 12pm on the day in question for more information about afternoon and evening classes.

Personalized Gift Certificates are available for art classes, Art Center membership, or you can customize your own gift. Call the Art Center at 345-1571 to order your personalized Gift Certificate.

Basic Drawing

With a step-by-step approach, instructor Erika Beyer will guide you through the drawing process and introduce you to a variety of drawing mediums. Each week, you will focus on one “big idea,” such as line, shape, and value. With these principles in mind, you will complete a series of exercises designed to strengthen your skills and develop your sense of perception. With patience, practice, and a positive attitude, you are sure to watch your drawings progress from week to week.

Perfect for students looking to further develop their skills, this new class offers a continued investigation into the wonderful world of drawing. This class is best suited for students with some drawing experience.

Studio Painting: Still Life & Figurative

Designed for intermediate to advanced students, this class offers a variety of painting exercises designed to inspire and challenge your creativity. You will begin by creating quick color studies from still lifes and as classes progress, you will gradually transition into longer paintings from the model. Each week, instructor Farley Craig will lead a class critique, providing the opportunity to share your art and learn from fellow students. With individual instruction and group discussion, this class is perfect for the student who possesses a passion for painting.

Oil Painting Fundamentals

Figure Painting: A One-Pose Study

In this class, you will have the opportunity to complete a comprehensive study of the human figure as you work from one pose over eight class sessions. You will experience the painting process from beginning to end, developing your piece from first sketches into a finished painting. Winter Workshop

Setting Up & Painting Still Lifes

Too rainy to paint outside this winter? Come explore the joys of indoor painting in this four-week workshop! Local artist Sarah Sedwick will guide you through the process of creating a still life from start to finish. You will learn how to place and light objects with maximum effect and how to select a successful composition. With instructor demonstrations, you will also have the opportunity to observe Sarah’s painting process, including how to start a painting with a loose under-drawing in oil paint. You will work from smaller individual still life set-ups, as well as larger shared ones, and learn to customize this method to your own unique painting style. Instruction will be in oils, but students are invited to use the medium of their choice.

Wheel Throwing

With a small class size and lots of individual instruction, this class is perfect for students of all skill levels to learn and review the fundamentals of working with clay and throwing on the potter’s wheel. This class offers a relaxed setting for you to experiment and perfect your wheel-throwing skills as you create bowls, vases, and mugs. With your instructor, Laura, you will also explore a variety of techniques such as “throwing off the hump,” which you can use to create lids and smaller bowls and cups. And, you will add color to your finished pieces using a variety of colored glazes. Adults and Young Adults (13 and over) are welcome.

Perfect for beginning potters and students looking to refresh their skills, this basic wheel-throwing class takes a step-by-step approach to working with clay. With the help of your instructor, Annelise, you will learn the basics of using the potter’s wheel and build a skill set that will enable you to form a cylinder to create vases, cups, and bowls. You will review a variety of techniques to embellish your pieces and add color to your finished pottery with a number of glazes. Discover Drawing & Painting

Private Art Lessons
Do you have a budding artist? It may be time for private art lessons at the Art Center!

Private Lessons are available for Youth (ages 6-12) and Young Adults (ages 10-16). Lessons will include (4) one-hour sessions with an Art Center Instructor. Weekly meetings. Lessons are available in a variety of drawing and painting mediums and are customized to fit each student's creative interests and schedule. To arrange private lessons for your young artist, please contact Sabrina at 345-1571 or sabrina@mkartcenter.org
