The
Illustrated Word: An Exhibit of Letterpress Broadsides
Opening
Reception: January 11, 6pm-8pm
Exhibition Dates: January 11 - February 8, 2008
Over the past few years, the “Small Press Movement” in
the United States has celebrated a resurgence of traditional printing
techniques used to create letterpress broadsides, an art form
historically used for making announcments or proclamations. Today,
using moveable type and a hand-cranked cylinder press, contemporary
printmakers work with visual artists, poets, and writers to create
beautifully crafted, limited edition artwork, which showcases
both the visual and literary elements of this art form.

We invite you to learn more about the
art of letterpress broadsides with Sandy Tilcock. Proprietor of
lone goose press, a juror for The Illustrated Word exhibit, and
a recognized printer and bookmaker, Sandy describes herself as
an “unabashed throwback,” saying “the work I do has its roots
in an age of printing and publishing when books were rare and
honored objects.” Sandy will share her knowledge and passion for
printing, as well as discuss the historical context of broadsides
and their contemporary creation.
